Q&A with Steve
Steve, what do you like about investment management? I like the fact that good financial planning is equal parts empathy, education, and business planning. I get great satisfaction from finding creative solutions that balance financial and psychological objectives.
One way I view my job is to make as much money as possible for my clients, while still allowing them to get a good night’s sleep every night. I like helping people be comfortable, relax, and enjoy their lives.
Also, I’m a numbers guy, and I enjoy the analytical task of coming up with a solid financial plan very much.
How do your personal experiences affect your approach? I bring the life experiences of starting multiple businesses, shepherding them through boom and bust cycles, being married and divorced, losing a parent, and raising two children and six dogs (not all at once!). Life is full of both ups and downs, and I understand that both financially and personally.
Are there any types of clients you especially like to work with? I have a special place in my heart for tech workers. As a business owner for more than 20 years, I enjoy working with other business owners. I’ve been divorced twice, so I’m especially empathetic to people going through that process. I also enjoy working with couples who are a little out of synch on their finances. If I can find creative solutions that add harmony to the financial part of a couple’s relationship, that’s a wonderful feeling.
Where does the “numbers guy” stuff come into your approach? After I get to know my client and understand their situation, I apply a lot of complex math to create solutions that will work well for their unique circumstances. I enjoy talking through the math with people who are interested, but I can keep it behind the scenes for people who aren’t interested. Mainly, I want to be sure my clients always have all their questions answered.
